The Edinburgh Vaults

The Edinburgh VaultsThe Edinburgh Vaults – or South Bridge Vaults – are a series of chambers formed in the nineteen arches of the South Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland, which was completed in 1788.

For around 30 years, The Edinburgh Vaults were used to house taverns, cobblers and other tradesmen.

It was a storage space for illicit material, reportedly including the bodies of people killed by serial killers Burke and Hare for medical experiments.

As the conditions in the vaults deteriorated – mainly because of damp and poor air quality – the businesses left and the very poorest of Edinburgh’s citizens moved in.

However, by around 1820, even they are believed to have left too.

That people had lived there was only discovered in 1985 during an excavation, when middens were found containing toys, medicine bottles, plates, and other signs of human habitation.

The frequent reports of paranormal activity and ghost sightings resulted in Living TV’s Most The Edinburgh VaultsHaunted, initiating an investigation at The Edinburgh Vaults in both a 24 hour episode and for a Most Haunted Live show on Halloween 2006, which included Haunted Scotland owner Ryan O’Neill.

The television show Ghost Adventures investigated The Edinburgh Vaults and claimed to have numerous encounters with spirits there.

Joe Swash, in a 2009 BBC TV production named “Joe Swash Believes in Ghosts” reportedly recorded unexplained voices in The Edinburgh Vaults during an overnight sleepover.

One voice was said to be that of a Catholic priest reciting the Last Rites.

The Edinburgh VaultsLots of different sightings have been witnessed by people, staff and other paranormal investigators.

The most notable is ghost of a man with no face that gives off an evil presence.

During three years of research down in The Edinburgh Vaults, Ryan reports that there are numerous anomalies ranging from cold spots recorded on the equipment, to other strange out-of-range data.

This was further emphasised by the plethora of reports from both Investigators & members of the public whom accompanied Ryan.

Contrary to the hypothesis of some well known sceptics, the amount of data far surpassed the possibility of tricks of the mind or delusional thinking.
