Personally, I have a lot of thoughts and hypothesises with regards to the paranormal, with most being formed through many a discussion with other great minds from within the paranormal community. I am open enough to admit that on entering the field I had zero knowledge of what I was getting myself into, the basic understanding of environmental probabilities and thus I had to build relationships and learn from those who have walked (and/or continue to do so) before me.
One such intrigue was the whole sentient and non-sentient haunting theme and I would spend weekends in deep discussion with people like Chris Huff from the North East of England. He had over 30 years of experience and I was like a sponge while also formulating my new ideas and thinking.
Wikipedia tells us:
I think that ticks the boxes in my head, so when I approach the subject of active paranormal occurrences I have many thoughts after the initial; logical natural explanation to be sought. Is the activity a recording (non-sentient) a la, ‘Stone Tape’ which was proposed as a paranormal hypothesis in the 1970’s as an explanation for ghostly activity. If not the aforementioned, are we looking at a sentient haunting which to witnesses displays some type of conscious awareness and movement. Even now, contemplating the whole thing brings great interest and a flash back to the hypothetical possibilities!!
Leaving the Sentient activity to the side (I know, if you are overly left brained you are screaming that none of this is provable *Chuckles*) and concentrating purely on the residual activity, one question continuous to surface over and over.
Could one hypothesis be that the emotion of the witness causes some type of energy spark that presses play on the recorder within said location? Its a lot to wrap the mind around for sure, I mean, like many people personally I have witnessed activity that remains unexplained and down right weird but at said time, I was emotionally fine…I think! 🙂 This in no way means that it can not be a possibility though, we know that brainwaves can be measured even outside of the head so can they interact with the surroundings? I know personally that I am willing to hold it as an option and not dismiss it at this time till more information is forthcoming!
One occurrence though that sticks in the mind happened well over 14 years ago and to me and involved an emotional time! Is this a key to the whole non-sentient activation?
Another thought can be the energy at time of death with raw emotion may etch itself into the surrounding inanimate materials, thus a witness who is experiencing similar emotions is unlocking this phenomena years later and causing the full playback. Maybe the conditions emotionally (energy in motion) are perfect for the playback and a whole plethora of environmental factors need to come to perfection and BOOM…we have the activity in action!!
More likely or I should say, more likely in most cases but not all, the disruption of above-mentioned inanimate materials through future reconstruction or development of area might unlock activity. How many of you great researchers have come across cases of such development followed by activity? Loads I bet!!
I will leave it here for pondering at this time and open it up to all who are interested in sharing their thoughts and research.
I will say though, its such a fascinating subject regardless of the inability for scientific findings due to not a hope on earth of it being tested properly. That does not mean that it does not exist though, I am very cautious and will not lay my faith at the door of science at the expense of personal research, study and experiencing of such topics.
I will end of with some more information from Wiki on the Stone Tape Theory, Enjoy!!
An early psychical researcher Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick had claimed that objects such as furniture or buildings can absorb “psychic energy” or impressions which could be transmitted to people nearby. The parapsychologist William G. Roll also agreed with the Stone Tape theory, he claimed that a person’s mind can create an apparition from “psychic traces” left from the past
In the terminology of ghost hunting, residual hauntings, also known as restligeists (German loan word from restlich meaning “residual” and geist meaning “ghost”), are repeated playbacks of auditory, visual, olfactory, and other sensory phenomena that are attributed to a traumatic event, life-altering event, or a routine event of a person or place, like an echo or a replay of a videotape of past events. Ghost hunters and related paranormal television programs say that a residual haunting, unlike an intelligent haunting, does not directly involve a spiritual entity aware of the living world and interacting with or responding to it.
According to this hypothesis, ghosts are not spirits but simply non-interactive recordings similar to a movie. Paranormal investigators commonly consider such phenomena as residual hauntings.
