Crookston Castle: Is Crookston Castle Haunted

Is Crookston Castle Haunted

Is Crookston Castle HauntedCrookston Castle is situated in the Pollok area of south-west Glasgow, Scotland. The castle sits some 5 miles south-west of the city centre, and 3 miles east of Paisley, overlooking the Levern Water.

The castle is surrounded by a defensive ring-ditch that dates back to the 12th century when Sir Robert de Croc – who also gave his name to the village of Crookston – built a timber and earth castle. Remains of a chapel founded in 1180 have been uncovered at the area too.

In 1489 the Stewart Earl of Lennox rebelled against James IV. James responded by bringing the cannon Mons Meg from Edinburgh, and bombarding the castle, virtually destroying its western end, and ensuring a quick surrender.

The castle is to have passed through several owners hands over the years, until 1757, when it was sold by William Graham, the 2nd Duke of Montrose to the Maxwells of Pollok.

Following several years of abandonment, the castle was then partially restored by the Maxwell family in and around 1847, to honour Queen Victoria’s visit to Glasgow.

Is Crookston Castle HauntedIn 1931, Crookston became the first property to be acquired by the National Trust for Scotland, having been presented by Sir John Maxwell, who was one of the Trust’s founder members. Today, Crookston Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and a Category A listed building. Its maintenance falls under the responsibility of Historic Scotland.

The property in its current form is very much well maintained, accessed free by all visitors, and one of the finer examples of architecture from this era.

Paranormal Activity

On researching Crookston Castle, we do not find anything to suggest firm accounts of activity are in place. There are plenty of suggestions of a possible haunting, but these are very much subjective and more in line with curiosity.

So, Is Crookston Castle Haunted?

I will say, any location can have no such documented reports, and in fact, be very much Is Crookston Castle Hauntedactive with no suitable or publicly made account of said activity being recorded. Good examples of this exist in cases such as Crail Airfiled, where only after a visit – and some recordings – did people come forward with stories.

The nearby Crookston Hotel on the other hand has a fair few stories with regards to paranormal activity. One of the owners has reported tables being tipped over, and glasses moving on their own on a near-on weekly basis. So the area is no stranger to activity of a paranormal kind.

I will be returning to this fantastic castle to conduct additional audio work, and will report back any finding from the visit.

Please enjoy the photography of Crookston Castle.
