Braemar Castle

Region : Grampian
Location :  near the village of Braemar in Aberdeenshire,

Details : A fortress built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar on the site of an even older habitation. It was a major centre of Jacobite resistance, and was usurped used as a seat of Hanoverian authority after the Jacobite Rising of 1745. see also undiscovered scotland

Paranormal Phenomena : Folklore tells of a honeymoon couple in the castle. The bride woke one morning to find herself alone and, thinking that she had been abandoned by her husband, she killed herself. Her ghost said to be a blonde-haired apparition of a young woman is only allegedly active when newly-weds are at the castle and she restricts her appearances to the bridegroom. In addition John Farquharson, the Black Colonel of Inverey, may also haunts the present building, sometimes it is said leaving a candle burning as a reminder of his presence.
